“Jumps” in the incidence of COVID-19 in Russia explained

In an interview with Sputnik radio, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, epidemiologist Vadim Pokrovsky told what factors influence the spasmodic statistics of the incidence of coronavirussia. The expert also shared a forecast of when a steady decline in the number of infected people will begin.

The graph, which reflects the number of daily detected cases of COVID-19, may be influenced by the characteristics of the spread of coronavirussian regions, Pokrovsky believes.

The “jumps” in incidence, according to the expert, are due to the fact that in different cities the periods of rise and fall of the wave of coronavirus infection may not coincide.

Pokrovsky clarified that the virus needs time to spread in a particular region, and in Russia the factor of a large area of the territory of the Russian Federation influences.

“At first we saw a strong rise in the incidence in Moscow, then a slight decrease in the number of new cases, while a steady increase continues in the rest of Russia, this is a completely natural phenomenon,” the specialist said.

The figures may increase in the middle of each week as Russian citizens are less likely to take COVID-19 tests on weekends. Most often, tests are done on Monday or Tuesday, as a result, the results appear in the middle of the week.

Pokrovsky added that a steady decline in the number of infected in each region begins when a certain time passes after the start of the rise in the incidence.

Earlier, the chief physician of the Filatov hospital, Valery Vechorko, indicated that the Moscow healthcare system was ready for the spread of the “omicron” strain, and the capital was able to overcome the peak incidence of coronavirus. At the same time, he stressed that “we should not relax” with such high absolute values of the incidence. According to him, outpatient

the link "continues to work in enhanced mode."

In turn, the chief employee of the Gamaleya Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, virologist, doctor of medical sciences, professor Anatoly Altstein said that in Russia, with the advent of the Omicron strain, the fifth wave of coronavirus has peaked. However, after some time, the number of cases of infection will begin to decrease, he predicts.

Alexander Gorelov, Deputy Director for Research at the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, explained that collective immunity to this variant of COVID-19 in the Russian Federation should be 90% to reduce the rise in the incidence, but this figure has not been achieved.
