Omicron antibodies do not neutralize other strains of COVID-19 well

On the territory of Russia, the strain of coronavirus has become dominant. In an interview with Sputnik radio, Anatoly Altshtein, professor at the Gamaleya Center, spoke about the features of the immunity that is developed to this strain.

According to Rospotrebnadzor, omicron infection accounts for more than 70% of cases of coronavirus infection detected in Russia.

Altstein pointed out that, at the same time, immunity, which is formed naturally upon contact with this strain, cannot guarantee protection against other variants of the virus. Antibodies after omicron, the expert clarified, are not able to prevent infection with previous versions of the coronavirus.

Altstein also added that despite the leadership positions of omicron, the delta still remains in Russia, the rest of the coronavirus strains play almost no role in the development of this epidemic.

Earlier it was reported that more than 3.14 million citizens were vaccinated in St. Petersburg, including over 2 thousand children. Herd immunity in the city has reached 100 percent. But officials note that it may not be of very high quality, since cases were taken into account when a resident of the region fell ill or was vaccinated more than six months ago. Accordingly, his level of antibodies may be quite low at present.
