Russia - Personal experience: How scammers tried to deceive a grandmother and what came of it

Russia (bbabo.net), - My grandmother doesn't smoke a pipe. Doesn't drink alcohol. She recently turned 96. There is only one goal - to fulfill the Longevity program, which the whole family and the Moscow government contribute to. But then the phone rang...

Granddaughter Olya got into the car and went shopping. It's a common thing. Grandmother crossed her and slammed the door, remembering that no one should open it.

The sun was going down. The phone call broke the silence of the old Moscow apartment. At first, painfully familiar sobs were heard in the receiver:

- Ba-ma-ba-ma... I'm in trouble... I can't... I'm in the 57th hospital. I was brought there after the accident. Soft-boiled machine. That's my fault. Save me ba...

The phone was picked up by a strange woman. She said in a metallic voice:

- Your relative killed a pedestrian. She faces jail. I'm Perkhushkin's investigator. If you want to "smear off" your little blood, then prepare the money. Much money. In return, I will secure her freedom. If not, he'll go to jail!

- I'm ready for anything for my granddaughter! Everything I have, I'll give! Just don't torture my girl!

- Good! Her phone is in the hands of the investigation. So don't call. We will contact you in half an hour. Prepare money urgently or prison, - cut off the receiver.

The phone went silent. My grandmother, even though she is 96 years old, realized that she urgently needed to call her granddaughter. But how to be? The investigators have the phone... I still dialed it. No answer.

... And the granddaughter chose outfits for spring and left the phone in her fashionable handbag. One, third call ... All without an answer. Grandmother went to the funeral stash and fell. Hypertensive crisis. Luckily the neighbor was there. They called an ambulance. Well, they called me to urgently go to the 57th hospital. There my wife is in serious condition after the accident...

Grandmother realized that she needed to call her granddaughter back. But the phone was silent. The granddaughter was keen on shopping...

I also needed an ambulance. Well, can you imagine? I was almost better than my grandmother. Although he went through all the wars and did not see this. I already called the hospital and was already wondering which of the doctors there could help with resuscitation, as my missus answered the call. She had finished trying on her left spring boot when something vibrated in her Gucci purse.

Yes, I'm at the mall. What happened?

- It happened? Yes, our grandmother whispers with angels ...

Of course, the police were called. I insisted. The ambulance doctors said that the grandmother did not communicate with the police for long. Pavel Tikhonov, who arrived at the scene from the Lomonosov police department, did not communicate much. But honestly he said:

- All the same, there will be a refusal.

- And why? Grandma almost died!

- Grandma was pumped out. And the calls are clearly from the "left" phone. So hello!

He didn't even issue an application certificate (KUSP).

The history is familiar. Thousands of times our newspaper warned: do not talk to strangers on the phone. But people, and not only the elderly, do not read newspapers. They believe the words from the tube. It's good that I intervened. If only Granny would take her funeral to a stranger. If not immediately died of greed, then later from the same.

I was also "bred". They called both from the "bank" and from the "police department". There is only one goal: to find out credit card details. What were they hoping for? Here on such defenseless old people who believe in the old memory of the state.

My advice to heirs: don't put your phone in your purse, keep it with you. Stay in touch with loved ones.

Anytime and anywhere.

Concert of "ringers"

Domestic scammers immediately began to actively adapt to the modern trend. They call citizens and claim that there are a lot of scammers around, so they are now doing a good deed - returning compensation to citizens for deceit. Yesterday, the Interior Ministry reported that another group of such "benefactors" was caught in Kazan. These are young people who are suspected of fraud under the pretext of paying compensation for previously incurred damage from the purchase of dietary supplements.

The detainees called citizens, most of whom are pensioners. And they reported that they purchased allegedly turned out to be unsuitable, in connection with which they, as victims, are entitled to compensation. But in order to receive a payment, you must pay for paperwork, commission, insurance or tax.

- Operatives of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Republic of Tatarstan managed to get on the trail of swindlers in December last year. The police found a private house, from where the accomplices called residents of various regions of the Russian Federation. As a result, the alleged organizer of the criminal scheme and three accomplices were detained. One of the accomplices has been put on the federal wanted list, - said the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, Irina Volk. The callers have already told the police that the organizers provided them with telephones and SIM cards, as well as lists of citizens to call. The conscience of the "ringers" - after all, they deceived mostly old people - was silent. Indeed, for each "successful" call, the performer received a quarter of the amount by which the person was deceived. Police say that so far the total amount of damage is more than 11 million rubles.

The deception about the return of compensation for the sold dietary supplements is not a local "know-how". It has already been used by scammers in other regions of the country more than once. The police calculated that last year alone in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region, 495 criminal cases were opened for crimes "related to the commission of fraudulent actions against senior citizens."

Among those who were deceived, there are many residents of besieged Leningrad and veterans of the Great Patriotic War, the department emphasizes. Moreover, more than half of these crimes were solved by the police. For fraud only in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region, 240 people were detained.

Tricks against swindlers

Viktor Zaprudsky, Chairman of the Moscow Bar Association "Zaprudsky and Partners":

- Now I can't save you from phone scammers. They even tried to "divorce" me last week. They wanted to make him a "victim" in the bank fraud case. Pretend to be an investigator. And let's ask for a credit card number and other details. Allegedly for investigative actions. The department is quarantined, so the survey is conducted by phone. Of course, the first thing I asked for was a number where I could call back to testify. Here interest in my person subsided. I gave a short lecture on the criminalization of telephone fraud. They understood everything and did not call again.

The fact that they called the police to your grandmother is good. But the employee was simply obliged to accept the application and issue a coupon "KUSP". If not, then he just wants to "blur" the matter. Now there is every opportunity to track down and punish the crooks. I state this responsibly. Let them call from a fake SIM card. But the unique phone number is still imprinted in every call. This number can be used to track the scammers. Up to the apartment. There would be a desire. And this is where the police have problems. Is grandma alive? Did the money disappear? Well, okay...

Of course, people of advanced age are the most tasty morsel in the field of swindle. An elderly person is immediately stunned with incredible and terrible news: your relative is in trouble. He faces criminal prosecution and so on. They usually call in the evening, when attention and reason become dull.

What should be done first? Everything is good to check. Ask the caller for the telephone number of the police station on duty. Usually at this stage, scammers give up. But under stress, a person acts unpredictably. Pull yourself together and ask the caller to pass the phone to "daughter" or "granddaughter." On the phone in this state, the voice may sound painfully familiar. But don't give up! Ask her or him the name of a favorite dog or the name of a grandfather. Short beeps will follow. So you have won!

But, I repeat, you should immediately dial the police number and make a statement. Even a telephone message about a crime is legally official, no matter what the district police tell you, to whom, most likely, this case will be pushed.

Believe it or not, but the Russian police cannot demand a "kickback" from the relatives of the accused. Especially over the phone. This case is so dangerous that not a single active employee at the first stage of the case, when all the calls of the victim are monitored, will risk his career, or even freedom. Therefore, when they demand money from you at night, feel free to hang up and immediately call back to the nearest police station. There should be help.

Another tip that will not be out of place for age-old property owners. You don't need to write a will. The apartment can be taken away with him. It is very easy to transfer property to future heirs during their lifetime. Here the question arises. What if the granddaughter gets married and the new family sells the apartment and sends the old people out on the street? There is such a type of donation or sale of real estate with an encumbrance. The contract will clearly state that the former owners have the right to reside in their penates until their death. And no one has the right to dispose of their living space. No heirs, no swindlers. Be carefull!

380 thousand rubles were lured from a pensioner

But in Mozhaisk, exactly the same fraudulent scheme was successful. Fortunately, the perpetrator was caught. The head of the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Moscow Region, Tatyana Petrova, said that her granddaughter allegedly called the 88-year-old local resident and in a crying voice said that she was responsible for the accident in which the woman suffered. Then a man entered the conversation, introduced himself as a law enforcement officer and suggested not to initiate a criminal case for 800 thousand rubles. The pensioner replied that she had only 379 thousand rubles. Then the swindler asked me to transfer at least this amount to him through his colleague, who would drive up to her house. The woman gave her address, and a few minutes later an unknown man drove up to her, to whom she handed over the money.

On the same day, the police detained a local resident who took cash from a pensioner. According to operational information, he may be involved in two more of the same crimes. The detainee was taken into custody.

By the way

Rating of crimes

The St. Petersburg police made up the main types of deception of elderly citizens.

The first type is a phone call from a supposedly close relative who is in trouble and who urgently needs money to save himself.

In second place are sellers of dietary supplements. Or those who offer compensation for once purchased dietary supplements.

Third on the police list are scammers who pose as social or community workers. They call or come with an offer to install windows, gas analyzers, sell water filters, fire extinguishers, panic buttons and more.

Next come the deceivers offering cheap repairs.
