Russia - WSJ: Fourth HIV cure confirmed in US

Russia (bbabo.net), - Doctors from New York managed to cure an HIV-infected patient with a stem cell transplant and a cord blood transfusion. This is the fourth recorded case of recovery from total immunodeficiency in the world, writes The Wall Street Journal.

The patient, a middle-aged woman, was diagnosed with leukemia four years after the discovery of her HIV infection. The patient was transplanted with stem cells from her relative with a rare genetic mutation that prevents the virus from multiplying. In addition, a cord blood transfusion was performed from the newborn.

According to the attending physician Marshall Glesby, now his patient feels normal, no signs of infection were found in her body, although she has not been on antiretroviral therapy since October 2020. True, science knows cases when HIV infection manifested itself in the body of patients after a significant period of time. But doctors hope for an optimistic development of the situation.

Recall that only three cases of recovery of HIV-infected patients have been recorded in the world so far. In 2007, this happened to American Timothy Ray Brown (died 2020). Patients from London and Düsseldorf also managed to recover.
