Russia - How homeless animals are caught in Tula

Russia (bbabo.net), - Since the beginning of the year, Tula residents have received more than 100 applications for trapping stray dogs. As Ekaterina Durmanova, deputy head of the landscaping department of the City Service of a Single Customer, said with reference to the Vanykin Emergency Hospital, the Tula residents did not receive serious injuries from them.

And disputes between animal rights activists and those who demand to remove all animals from the streets do not subside.

The mayor's office invited journalists to take part in a raid to catch stray dogs. We went on request to the new microdistrict Petrovsky Quarter. Here, brand new high-rise buildings coexist with the private sector and dacha cooperatives. The first mongrel that came across rushed from people with cameras to the nearest construction site. There, the animal was fed dry food and lightly anesthetized with a dart. The sleeping animal was placed in a cage. In an hour, the specialists of the shelter "Continet" caught three dogs in this way. By the way, anesthesia is not a mandatory procedure at all. If the dog is not aggressive, does not run away, you can do without it, and the applicants themselves sometimes help put the animals in a cage.

- Aggressive, according to the conclusion of the veterinarian, we do not release animals back, they are kept for life. The main goal is to prevent breeding, to reduce the population, - explains Ekaterina Durmanova.

Last year, 1,417 dogs were caught in the regional center, and only 17 remained in the shelter. Quite often, the townspeople begin to poison homeless animals and shoot at them. Fearing just such a development of events, summer residents from a cooperative located not far from high-rise buildings sent an application for trapping. They even bought a large package of dry food and collected more money to donate to a dog shelter.

- We want our dogs to be spayed, vaccinated and safe for children. We will continue to take care of them, feed and house them. But it is necessary that they do not multiply, - explained the representative of the cooperative Svetlana Fedotova.

We are going together with the captured dogs to the shelter "Continent" in the village of Sergievsky. It is 30 kilometers from the city. Dog enclosures are located away from the houses. Local residents say that at first they opposed such a neighborhood, but it turned out that everything is not so scary: they do not interfere at all. Although now there are about 800 animals.

- When they are brought in, the first thing they do is put them in a 10-day quarantine. Animals are examined and vaccinated. After - sterilization, then overexposure for 10 days. At this moment, special chips are placed under the withers and a tag on the ears so that it can be seen that the animal has been captured. After 30 days, if not aggressive and not sick, they are released into their former habitat, - explains Elena Khromova, Deputy General Director of Continent LLC. - Aggressive dogs are examined by both a doctor and an administrator, a cynologist will soon appear on staff who will help the dog adapt to life in the environment. If possible, they will release him, if not, he will be on life support.

In the enclosures, fresh straw, booths. Feed the dogs twice a day dry food and cooked food. For each pet - 95 rubles per day. This is money that is allocated only for maintenance (feeding with minimal care), but this is not enough for the treatment of animals.

- We do not live in poverty: well-wishers, founders help. But everything else - at their own expense, there are other types of business - says Elena Khromova.

We walk around the shelter: the dogs are well-groomed, one paw is bandaged - it looks like they put a dropper. Big and small, shaggy and not so, each dog is beautiful in its own way, and in there is a dumb question: maybe you came for me? Although not everyone. In the corner enclosure, the eyes are smart and barking nervously - leave me alone. This dog was taken away at the call of the police: his owner died, and he did not let anyone near him.

- The biggest problem is that unscrupulous owners throw dogs out into the street. They are breeding. Hence such a large accumulation of animals, - Elena Khromova notes. - Look, there are also thoroughbreds - Alabai, Malamutes. These are animals that, in principle, cannot live on the street. And people do not cope and put them out the door. It happens, of course, that you have lost a pet. We have every dog on overexposure. The man looked at our page in social networks, saw his own and arrived. We ask: why did your dog run down the street? They say she went off the leash. Sometimes they are even a month later.

Local resident Nikolai told how he found an alabai tied to a tree in the forest. He had obviously been sitting in the forest for several days and was slowly dying of hunger. Tulyak took him - he turned out to be the kindest and laziest dog.

- He was even too lazy to bark, - Nikolai laughs. - Or maybe he was afraid to do something wrong, so that he would not be sent to the forest again.

However, for protection, one of his formidable appearance was enough.- The law is not perfect. It made a great emphasis on shelters, trapping, but bypassed animal breeders, - Elena Khromova believes. - In Germany, if you got a dog, but did not immediately go to the veterinarian, did not get registered, then a big fine. Bought an animal - pay taxes. Released into the yard - make sure that the dog does not shit in the sandbox. There are children walking around. Nowhere have we seen a man come out with a bag and clean up after his dog. There would be a system that tracks animals, each dog has a tag that indicates who is the owner, his phone number. Called - pick up and pay a fine.

In Tula, at one time they tried to introduce a tax on pets - 25 rubles a year. The amount is small, rather so that a person understands that he is responsible for the one he has tamed. But nothing happened. The law was drowned under a wave of indignation: they say, the grandmother already took the dog from the street, feeds it, treats it on her pension, what else should she pay for it!

And that's true too...
