Russia - Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences was skeptical about the prospects for HIV treatment with stem cells

Russia (bbabo.net), - The method of treating HIV infection with stem cell transplantation and cord blood transfusion will not be widely used. This was announced to RIA Novosti by the head of the scientific center for the prevention and control of AIDS of the Central Research Institute of Rospotrebnadzor, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vadim Pokrovsky.

According to him, the main problem of the method is the extremely small number of donors for such an operation.

The method itself consists in destroying the bone marrow of a patient with HIV exposure and transplanting it from a donor who has a genetic immunity to infection. After that, instead of the patient's immune cells, the donor's immune cells begin to multiply. However, Pokrovsky explained, the proportion of such donors among the population of Northern Europe, including Russia, is about 1%, and the further south, the fewer.

"It is necessary to take into account not only genetic immunity, but also simply the compatibility of donor cells of a sick recipient, to whom they are transplanted. Therefore, this method is not widely used," the scientist noted.

At the same time, Pokrovsky added that from a scientific point of view, this experience is very important, since it proves that it is possible to get close to the treatment or prevention of HIV infection.

On the eve of The Wall Street Journal reported that doctors from New York managed to cure an HIV-infected patient with a stem cell transplant and cord blood transfusion.

This is the fourth recorded case of recovery from total immunodeficiency in the world.
