Women in Saudi Arabia decided to become train drivers en masse

A railway company in Saudi Arabia posted 30 new job openings for women and received more than 28,000 resumes in response. The job posting sparked so much interest after the country's loosening of employment rules for women. It is reported by The Guardian.

Saudi-based Spanish rail company Renfe said online assessments of academic and English skills have reduced the number of candidates by about half, with the remaining nominations to be considered by mid-March.

Women who get jobs will drive high-speed trains between the cities of Mecca and Medina after a year of paid training. Currently, the company employs 80 machinists, and 50 more pass - study.

Until recently, women in Saudi Arabia were only allowed to work in education or medicine. They received the right to drive a car only in 2018.

Over the past five years, the number of working women in the country has doubled and amounted to 33%. In the third quarter of 2021, the share of employed Saudi women was about half of the number of employed men, however, the unemployment rate for women was three times higher than for men - 21.9%.
