Russia - Exceptionally rare and creepy chimera found in the Pacific Ocean

Russia (bbabo.net) - Near the South Island of New Zealand, researchers have discovered an exceptionally rare, recently hatched "ghost shark".

"Translucent, gelatinous and topped with a pair of giant black eyes on a pointed head, the alien fry likely belongs to one of more than 50 known species of ghost sharks, also known as chimeras," the New Zealand National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research told Science Alert. Zealand (NIWA).

A newborn chimera was caught in nets during a recent NIWA trawl survey conducted at about 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) to assess the population of another native hokey fish.

According to NIWA researchers, ghost shark embryos develop in eggs laid on the seafloor. The embryos feed on the yolk until it's time to hatch.

Given their small size and exceptionally deep habitat, baby ghost sharks are extremely rare sights.
