Deputy Sinelshchikov: Russia will not resume the death penalty after the suspension of membership in the Council of Europe

The Russian Federation will not abandon the moratorium on the death penalty, despite the suspension of the rights of the state in the Council of Europe. This was stated by Yuri Sinelshchikov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on State Building and Legislation. According to him, the resumption of the use of the death penalty depends, rather, not on the Council of Europe, but on the attitude of the majority of members of parliament.

“I think it's not so tightly connected. Because all our connections with Europe that existed, they were not rigidly tied to the use of the death penalty. It was more of a recommendation. Now there is one mood in society, but in the Duma and in the Presidential Administration there are somewhat different moods on this score. I do not think that anything will change significantly due to the fact that we will have different relations with the Council of Europe and with Europe in general. Today, I do not see any special changes in the attitude towards the issue of the death penalty on the part of the majority of parliament. Although I repeat that it should have been resumed, and should have been applied and executed in individual, extremely rare cases, ”he said.

Earlier it became known that Russia's rights to representation in the Council of Europe (CE) were suspended against the backdrop of a special operation of the Russian Federation in the Donbass. The CE message also states that the Russian Federation remains a member of the organization and a party to the relevant CE conventions, including the European Convention on Human Rights.
