Over the past day, 90,418 new cases of COVID-19 infection have been recorded in the UK. Reported by The Sun.

The day before, the number of detected cases of coronavirus infection in the country was 93,045.

At the same time, over the past day, 10,059 cases of the omicron strain COVID-19 were registered. This figure is three times higher than it was the day before (3201 cases).

The total number of cases of the disease caused by this type of virus in Britain has reached 24,968.

Seven people have already died from the omicron in the United Kingdom.

In total, 11,279,428 cases of coronavirus infection have been reported in Britain since the start of the pandemic.

Earlier, the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, declared a state of emergency in connection with an increase in the number of cases of infection with the omicron strain, which may cause the city's hospitals to be overcrowded with patients in the very near future.

Prior to that, the UK's chief medical officer, Professor Chris Whitty, said that this variant of the coronavirus would quickly peak in its spread, but also quickly decline. According to him, the new strain of COVID-19 will peak in the near future, but after that the doubling of the rate of infection will slow down soon enough.
