Biblical scholar explained who the Qur'anic character As-Samiri really could be

Aleksey Skorik, a Judaism teacher from Kharkov, told who Al-Samiri could actually be, the man who tempted the people of Musa (Moses) with the help of the Golden Calf.

This word occurs three times in the Qur'an and is usually translated as "Samaritan".

Skorik, who teaches Old Testament texts, believes that the Samaritan in the Qur'an "is a mistake of the translators." He wrote about this on his Facebook page.

“The people of the Samaritans are officially called Shomronim, which means the Guardians. This people appeared before Jesus from the New Testament and this people did not exist at the time of Moses. The Quran says not a Samaritan, but SAMIRI, which completely overlaps with the character of the Torah - Zimri, he just lived in the time of Moses. The Koran in this case is not mistaken, translators are mistaken. There are other opinions, ”explained Oleksiy Skorik.

In Islam, among all the messengers of the Most High, Moses stands out as one of the five most significant and strong in spirit, along with Noah, Abraham, Jesus and Muhammad. The story of Moses is detailed in the Qur'an. In its context, the “Samaritan” (As-Samiri) is also mentioned:

"Allah said:" O Musa! Why did you hasten to leave your people? " He (Musa) said: "They are nearby and follow in my footsteps, but I hastened to You, my Lord, so that You would be satisfied." He (Allah) said: "We tempt your people after you left them, and the Samaritan led them astray." Musa returned to his people angry and saddened and said: "O my people! Didn't your Lord give you a wonderful promise? Was this a long time for you? Or did you want the wrath of your Lord to fall on you, and therefore you violated a promise made to me? " They said, "We did not break our promise to you of our own free will. We were laden with the heavy ornaments of that people and threw them into the fire, and the Samaritan also threw them." He made for them a statue of a calf, which bellowed, and said: "Here is your god and the god of Musa, but he forgot him." Did they not see that he did not answer them a word and that he was not able to harm them or benefit them? Harun had told them before: "O my people! You are tempted by this. Your Lord is the Most Merciful. Follow me and obey my commands." They said, "We will not stop worshiping him until Musa returns to us." He said: "O Harun! When you saw that they were deluded, what prevented you from following me? Did you really disobey me?" He said: “O son of my mother! Do not grab my beard and head. I was afraid that you would say:“ You divided the sons of Israel and did not fulfill my instructions. ”He (Musa) asked:“ What do you say, oh Samaritan? "" (Ta-ha 20: 83-95).
