UN report on Islamic philanthropy in support of refugees released

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, in partnership with the World Islamic League, has released a report on Islamic philanthropy for the second half of 2021.

The document talks about the humanitarian role of zakat and sadaki (two main forms of Muslim charity) received by the UN through a specialized Zakat Fund to help refugees.

According to the report, 584,586 refugees and internally displaced persons in twelve countries: Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, Mauritania, Nigeria, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Malaysia received help from Muslim charitable funds.

The total amount of support was $ 27.5 million, of which more than 70% fell on zakat funds.

The report was presented by WIL Secretary General Abdul Karim Al Isa at Expo 2020 Dubai at the Muslim World League pavilion discussion platform in the presence of representatives of humanitarian and international organizations and news agencies.

The document points to the growing role of Islamic philanthropy in UNHCR projects - in particular, in cooperation with the World Islamic League. Thus, with the participation of VIL, the Academy of Islamic Fiqh issued a new fatwa, which was added to the register of the Zakat Fund to help refugees.

The register contains more than 10 fatwas published by authoritative scholars and theological and legal institutions of Islam.
