Arabic calligraphy recognized as Intangible Heritage by UNESCO

New treasures of world culture have been added to the UNESCO Intangible Heritage List. Reported by The Art Newspaper.

This year, 43 new items have been added to the list. in particular highlights Arabic calligraphy, Congolese rumba dance, and the pottery of the Avajun people in northern Peru.

“Arabic calligraphy has always emphasized the importance of unique forms of creative expression within a single culture, but now, having passed this cross-cultural test, it confirms the universal character of Islamic art,” said Deputy Culture Minister Hamed bin Muhammad Fayez.

A campaign to promote the recognition of Arabic calligraphy as a World Heritage Site has been organized by 16 Arabic-speaking countries.

In July this year, at the 44th session of UNESCO, the number of cultural monuments of Russia that have the status of World Heritage increased. The list of the international organization includes the Neolithic petroglyphs of Lake Onega and the White Sea.
