Forecaster discovered rare diamond dust in the atmosphere of Moscow

Russia (bbabo.net) - The combination of high humidity and severe frost in the metropolitan area has led to the formation of a rare atmospheric phenomenon in the air. Yevgeny Tishkovets, a leading employee of the Phobos weather center, spoke about this.

"In the conditions of an abnormal 20-degree cold and high air humidity in the atmosphere, a type of solid precipitation, rare for Central Russia, is recorded - diamond dust - a phenomenon in the form of tiny ice crystals floating in the air," the forecaster explained to RIA Novosti. According to him, this phenomenon is also called "ice needle" or "clear-sky precipitation", as it usually forms in cloudless weather.

Visually, diamond dust is similar to fog, which is composed of ice crystals. It manifests itself in short bursts when crystals reflect light at a certain angle. The boundary of the formation of this dust is between the warmer air at an altitude and more humid, colder air closer to the ground, Tishkovets explained. For people, this phenomenon is not dangerous.

As Rossiiskaya Gazeta wrote earlier, the night of December 22 became the coldest in Moscow over the past 54 years: the thermometers dropped below -22 degrees, in the region - to -28. The peak of the polar invasion of the capital, according to forecasters, has already passed: -13 degrees and even the sun are expected on Thursday afternoon.
