Russia: Invention leads to prison

Russian inventor from Kuban Region got a court sentence for an innovative design that has become a sensation at the Paris exhibition. During the development of flexible solar cells, he ordered a solvent by mail, which was then revealed to be also a psychotropic substance.

Prikubansky district court ofKrasnodar Region sentenced Lopatin to the three years of probation for "committing an attempt of the illegal acquisition of a psychotropic substance in large amounts without an intention of its further distribution." The court has failed to prove the fact of smuggling, however the state prosecution required 11 years in prison for the scientist.

The Krasnodar territorial innovation policy department of Ministry for Economy commented that Lopatin was the only Russian representative at the international summit of science and technological entrepreneurship "Hello Tomorrow". The young man's invention also was put in a top-list of 100 best projects from all over the world. But many investors, who have shown great interest to the Kuban solar cells (among them was Shell company – one of the world's energy sector leaders), were unaware that Dmitry had to run at full tilt from the courtroom to the forum place.
