Putin signs law banning commercial fishing of marine mammals

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law banning commercial and coastal fishing for whales, dolphins and porpoises. The corresponding document is posted on the official portal of legal information.

The law uses the general term "cetaceans", that is, commercial fishing is prohibited for all species of dolphins and whales, including sperm whales, narwhals, beluga whales, killer whales, porpoises, etc.

Previously, the catch of marine mammals on the territory of the Russian Federation was carried out according to quotas issued by the Federal Agency for Fishery, but in recent years, after the scandal around the "whale prison", they were practically not singled out.

In 2018, about a hundred belugas and killer whales were caught in the Sea of Okhotsk for subsequent illegal sale. For some time, 11 killer whales and 90 belugas were illegally kept in captivity in Srednaya Bay in the Primorsky Territory. They were caught to be sold to Chinese aquariums. The story received a wide response around the world, after which the animals were released. On December 30, 2021, the infamous "whale prison" was dismantled.

Earlier, State Duma Chairman Viacheslav Volodin spoke about ten new laws that will come into force in January.
