Azerbaijan's national air carrier canceled flights to Almaty

Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) canceled flights to Almaty amid ongoing protests and the seizure of the airport there. This was reported by Sputnik Azerbaijan with reference to the airline.

Passengers who have bought tickets for flights on the Baku-Alma-Atu route and back will be able to receive a full refund or rebook the ticket for free.

Almaty International Airport confirmed that the protesters had seized the building. The airport staff left the building. Prior to that, the airport in the Kazakh city of Aktau suspended operations, and late flights were canceled at the Nur-Sultan airport due to the curfew.

Some airlines, including the Russian Aeroflot and the Belarusian Belavia, also began canceling flights to Almaty.

In Kazakhstan, protests continue, which began on January 2 in the city of Zhanaozen, Mangistau region, after the price per liter of liquefied gas increased to 120 tenge (about 21 rubles). Before that, the price for a liter of gas was 60 tenge. Two days later, clashes between protesters and the police and the military began in Almaty and a number of other cities. Clashes also took place in Aktobe, Taraz, Aktau and other settlements.
