State Department advised US citizens to avoid protests in Kazakhstan

The US State Department has called on American citizens in Kazakhstan to avoid protests that have begun in various parts of the country over the past few days. This is stated on Twitter of the department.

“Protests in several cities. Possible increased security measures, interruptions in public transport and disconnection of the Internet Mangystau, Almaty and Nur-Sultan have declared a state of emergency. Avoid demonstrations, ”the message says.

The website of the American Embassy in Kazakhstan also warned that even "even peaceful demonstrations can escalate into confrontation and violence."

“You should avoid demonstrations and be careful when you are near any large gatherings of people or protests,” the department said.

In Kazakhstan, protests began on January 2 in the city of Zhanaozen, Mangistau Oblast, after the price for a liter of liquefied gas increased to 120 tenge (about 21 rubles). Before that, the price for a liter of gas was 60 tenge. Two days later, clashes between protesters and the police and the military began in Almaty and a number of other cities. Clashes also took place in Aktobe, Taraz, Aktau and other settlements.

Now in Alma-Ata, armed protesters are smashing Tokayev’s residence, the security forces have left the building.
