The World Health Organization said that the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus infection in the world exceeded 290 million, and the number of deaths - 5.44 million, TASS reports.

According to the world organization on Thursday evening, the WHO received information about 290 959 532 infected and 5 446 753 deaths. In total, the number of people infected per day increased by 1,276,532, deaths - by 4,632.

Over the past week, a daily increase of over a million infected was recorded six times. The anti-record for the entire time of the pandemic (since the spring of 2020) was recorded on January 1, 2022. Then there were 1,859,485 cases of infection. WHO statistics take into account only officially confirmed information on the infected and the deaths provided by states.

The publication notes that the largest number of coronavirus cases reported to WHO was in the United States. In total, 54,910,550 were recorded there.
