Putin instructed to prepare proposals to combat torture in colonies

Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the Ministry of Justice and the General Prosecutor's Office to prepare proposals to prevent bullying of prisoners in pre-trial detention centers and colonies.

"The Ministry of Justice of Russia, together with the General Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation, to analyze the practice of applying the criminal-executive legislation of the Russian Federation and, if necessary, prepare proposals aimed at preventing the use of illegal methods of influence against persons held in custody and sentenced to imprisonment," the list of instructions reads. published on the Kremlin website.

The report to the relevant departments must be prepared by June 1, 2022.

Earlier, during an annual press conference, Putin said that torture in places of deprivation of liberty is not only a Russian problem. He also noted that 17 criminal cases are being investigated in Russia in connection with the torture of prisoners.

Prior to this, a bill was introduced to the State Duma to toughen the punishment for torture organized by government officials. The maximum sanction under the bill is up to 12 years in prison.
