In Alma-Ata, a child died from a gunshot wound, another was injured, TASS reports with reference to the press service of the Ombudsman for the Rights of the Child in Kazakhstan.

“According to the ombudsman for the rights of children, Aruzhan Sain, on January 5, a child died from a gunshot wound in Alma-Ata. Parents were walking with their children when a shot rang out, which became fatal for an 11-year-old Kazakhstani, ”the press service said.

They also added that on January 7, a 15-year-old teenager was taken to one of the city's children's hospitals with a severe gunshot wound. He was driving with his father when the attackers shot the car. Currently, doctors continue to fight for the life of a teenager.

Earlier, the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, declared January 10 a day of national mourning.

In Alma-Ata, riots have not abated for several days. The rioters were able to capture several administrative buildings and the airport. Since January 6, a counter-terrorist operation has been going on in the city, the military, including the CSTO contingent, have been brought into the city. The security forces were able to take control over the airport only two days later - on January 7.

On January 2, mass protests began in Kazakhstan. This happened after the government decided to raise gas prices from 60 to 120 tenge. The protests quickly escalated into riots and clashes with the police. On January 4, the government commission announced its decision to reduce the gas price to 50 tenge. On the night of January 5, the President of the country announced the introduction in the country of 180-day state regulation of prices for fuel and food.
