Polygamy in Islam

Polygamy in Islam is a topic that attracts the interest of both Muslims and non-Muslims.

Polygamy is allowed for Muslims, subject to certain conditions.

“If you are afraid that you will not be fair to the orphans, then marry other women that you like: two, three, four. If you are afraid that you will not be equally fair to them, then be content with one or the slaves who have taken possession of your right hands. " (Quran 4: 3)

That is, according to the Qur'an, the fundamental principle in Islamic polygamy is the observance of justice in relation to all wives.

If a man decides to take another wife for himself, he must make sure that his previous marriage does not suffer. Marriage is like a building and it is not worth building a new one by destroying the old. It is not for nothing that the above verse says that in case of doubt about a man's ability to maintain equality in relation to several wives, it is better to be content with one.

Islamic theologians believe that the lack of fairness between several wives allows those of them who are infringed on their family rights to demand a divorce.

Observance of justice means, first of all, the same material content for all wives without exception, as well as equal attention, including physical and emotional closeness.

This, in itself, is far from everyone's strength, but if these rules are not followed, the life of a polygamist can become very difficult, since he will be in constant conflicts with one or the other wife.

It must be understood that a man does not just have the right to take two, three or four wives for himself. In this case, he is obliged to create two, three, four full-fledged families.

As the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "A man who had two wives, and he preferred one over the other, will come on the Day of Resurrection in a twisted state."

It is also worth considering the fact that by offending his wives, a person offends the slaves of the Almighty, and for this he will also be punished on the Day of Judgment.

Islam does not force a woman to live in an atmosphere of moral and physical humiliation and, accordingly, it is the man who is responsible for ensuring that her life does not turn into continuous torment.

Moreover, the practice of threatening a second marriage is unacceptable if the husband believes that the wife is not performing her duties properly. It will only ruin the marriage. It is much better to understand the reasons for the misunderstanding between the spouses than to threaten. It is possible that the husband himself is not fulfilling his duties.

Polygamy is primarily a social measure, the meaning of which is that every woman deserves to have a family. In the case when a man can support and take care of several women, polygamy is quite natural. It is necessary to take into account the fact that there are more women than men for various reasons, and not every man can start a family.

However, even in Islamic countries, polygamy is not common for many reasons.
