Russia - Scientists warn of the risk of diabetes in adolescents who have recovered from COVID-19

Russia (bbabo.net), - American scientists came to disappointing conclusions: adolescents who have undergone coronavirus are diagnosed with diabetes mellitus much more often than their peers.

As follows from the publication of the US Centers for Infectious Disease Control, scientists analyzed the incidence of diabetes among Americans under 18 years old, recorded from March 2020 to June 2021. The study examined the medical records of more than 800 thousand young patients. It was found that in the group of those who carried the coronavirus, diabetes mellitus was diagnosed in 316 cases per 100 thousand people. Among those who did not have coronavirus, diabetes was diagnosed in 118 cases per 100 thousand patients. Thus, a disappointing diagnosis after COVID-19 in adolescents was made 2.6 times more often. Moreover, scientists have also found that more than 25 percent of the risk of diabetes increases among those adolescents who have had ARVI.

So far, American doctors do not have a definite answer as to what is causing the increase in the number of cases of diabetes among adolescents who have had coronavirus. It is hypothesized that this may be due to the fact that new patients are young men and women who have previously been diagnosed with prediabetes, this is a condition when blood sugar is constantly exceeded, but this is not diabetes and subject to the recommendations of doctors before real diabetes may never come to pass. But when adolescents with such a diagnosis fell ill with coronavirus, their pancreas began to function under conditions of increased stress, in severe cases, minors even experienced a cytokine storm, which led to changes in glucose metabolism and the pre-diabetic state was transformed into diabetes.

Steroids are often used in the treatment of coronavirus. According to the second version, they can also cause high blood sugar and lead to the development of diabetes.

But the final link neither with drugs, nor with the "attack" of the coronavirus on the pancreas has not been established.

The study authors note that given the increased risks, doctors need to measure blood sugar in adolescents who have had coronavirus. You should be especially wary if young patients constantly feel thirst, hunger, lose weight, have frequent urination and regularly feel sick. Then you should definitely get tested to rule out diabetes.
