Russia (bbabo.net), - The year ended 2021 entered the seven warmest on the planet in the entire history of observations. This verdict was made by European scientists participating in the Copernicus Climate Change Service project.
As noted, the average annual temperature was 0.3 degrees Celsius higher than in 1991-2020. Moreover, in comparison with the period 1850-1900, it turned out to be 1.1-1.2 degrees higher. According to scientists, although the past year was one of the warmest, it never broke the records set in 2016 and 2020.
The researchers associate the rise in temperatures with the concentration of carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere. Forest fires were one of the reasons for this change.
It should be noted that the published data did not come as a surprise to experts. A few months ago, representatives of the World Meteorological Organization announced that 2021 will be among the seven warmest years. Scientists made their prediction not only on the basis of data on carbon dioxide emissions, but also on information about melting ice in the Arctic and rising sea levels.
The year ended was remembered for extreme weather events, in particular, powerful heat waves in North America in June-July and in the Mediterranean in August, which were accompanied by local temperature records. A severe drought hit the subtropical regions of South America. At the same time, heavy rains in July led to flooding in China and Western Europe.
