Russia (bbabo.net) - Due to the unvaccinated population, the omicron coronavirus strain is able to adapt and mutate. This opinion was expressed by the chief freelance specialist in therapy and general practice of the Ministry of Health of Russia Oksana Drapkina.

"Vaccines are effective in terms of the likelihood of infection with omicron, they seriously protect against severe disease and death. The greater the proportion of the unvaccinated population, the greater the chances for the virus to adapt and mutate, therefore, not only coverage is important, but also the speed of this coverage", - explained Drapkina, whose words are quoted by URA.RU.

According to a specialist from the Ministry of Health, the new strain was many times more infectious than "delta". Oksana Drapkina recalled that with omicron, children are more likely to get sick, in addition, with it, contagiousness is very high, that is, many times more people have a chance of contracting a new strain than with previous mutations.

Earlier, researchers from the University of Helsinki developed a molecule that could provide short-term protection against coronavirus. It is noted that it begins to act immediately after administration. The drug, if its action is confirmed as a result of clinical trials, can be taken if a person is in an area of ​​increased risk of infection.
