Catalan authorities rehabilitate more than 700 women executed for witchcraft

The Catalan Parliament has decided to rehabilitate all women who were executed in the region from the 15th to the 18th century, suspecting witchcraft, reports the Daily Mail.

The resolution on pardon was adopted by a majority vote of parliamentarians: 114 voted "for", 14 "against", 6 more abstained. Part of the proposed rehabilitation is that streets in Catalonia could be named after executed women.

“Recently, we found data on more than 700 women who were persecuted, tortured and executed between the 15th and 18th centuries,” the authors of the idea said.

It is reported that the ruling was supported by the left and nationalist parties of Catalonia, who compared the witch hunt with femicide.

According to a study conducted by the scientific journal Sapiens in collaboration with the historian Pau Castella, Catalonia was one of the first regions in Europe where witch-hunts began in the 15th century.

Earlier it became known that women who were executed for witchcraft almost 500 years ago will be pardoned in Scotland.
