Skeletonist who fell ill with COVID rented an apartment for self-isolation at his own expense

The leader of the Russian skeleton team Nikita Tregubov told Match TV that he rented an apartment in Sochi at his own expense, where he lives after a positive test for coronavirus.

“After positive tests, an ambulance came to our base twice to take us away from there. The first time I wrote a waiver. The second time there was no point in writing a refusal. And where to go? I'm not the only one involved in this, I also have a bobsledder Alexei Pushkarev with me, he also has positive tests. Alexey and I went to the hospital, they examined us, they said that there were no symptoms ... Let's go to the ward, they say. We go into the ward, where the patients lie. We'll only get sicker in the hospital. We write a refusal, we wait two hours on the street until everything is processed for us, ”said Tregubov.

“Alexey and I rented apartments in Sochi, each separately. We do our own tests. Both apartments and tests are all at your own expense, ”added the athlete.

According to Tregubov, the Russian Bobsleigh Federation invited him and Pushkarev to come back to the training base.

“But how would we drive back to the base if we test positive again? A day later, I would again have a positive test, and again I would simply be taken away in an ambulance. This is absurd,” he said.

Skeletonist Tregubov, who fell ill with COVID, expressed hope to participate in the Games Others Tregubov again expressed the hope that he would still be able to compete at the Beijing Olympics.

“There is still a lot of time before the Olympics. I can safely pass the required number of negative tests and go to China. I had my first positive test on the 21st-22nd. Moreover, you can leave for the Olympics later. But it’s not me who decides, as you can see, ”said the skeletonist.

According to Tregubov, he can only wait for negative tests and the decision of the federation regarding his possible replacement.

“I took the test yesterday, waiting for the result. And today I will give up. As I pass negative tests, I can return to the base to the team. There are still two weeks before the first training days in China. The team leaves for the Games on January 31st. There is still a lot of time, I will fight,” he said.

The positive tests of the athlete for COVID became known on January 25.

In addition to Tregubov, the team included Alexander Tretyakov, Vladislav Semenov, Elena Nikitina, Yulia Kanakina, Alina Tararychenkova (reserves - Alena Frolova, Rukosuev).

Tregubov is the silver medalist of the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, the winner of the world and European championships.

In the 2021/22 World Cup, Tregubov took fourth place and became the best among Russian skeletonists.
