Yagudin linked the increase in the age limit of figure skaters with the success of Russia

The issue of raising the age limit for figure skaters would not have been raised if athletes not from Russia, but from other countries, were competing for gold in figure skating. This opinion of RBC Sport was expressed by the 2002 Olympic champion in men's single skating Alexei Yagudin.

“In all normal sports, an athlete can safely perform from the age of 15. Figure skating is a normal sport. I am sure that if the national team of the USA, Canada, Japan, for example, had 15-year-old girls who fought for gold, then this issue would not have been raised. And the Russians are fighting,” Yagudin said.

Tarasova assessed the consequences of raising the age limit for figure skaters at the 2022 Olympics. The International Skating Union (ISU) has previously proposed raising the age limit in figure skating in stages. According to Match TV, the ISU submitted this proposal to the 2022 congress and argued it with the data of the medical commission.

The Skating Union plans to raise the age bar in stages: next season, the age will remain unchanged (in all disciplines, athletes can continue to compete from the age of 15), in the 2023/2024 season, skaters from 16 years old will be allowed to compete in adult competitions, in the 2024/2025 season - from 17 years.

ISU added that 86% of coaches and skaters were in favor of raising the age limit.

Valieva has a positive doping test. The main thing at the Olympics Olympics 2022 The Norwegian Skating Association made a proposal to raise the age limit for skaters. In December, Olympic ice dancing champion Natalya Bestemyanova told RBC Sport that the proposal was aimed at excluding Russians from the fight for first places. “In our country, 15-year-old athletes can compete on equal terms with adults and defeat them,” Bestemyanova said then, not ruling out that the proposal to increase the age limit would be accepted.

At the same time, the champion also noted a positive moment from the innovation - according to her, the audience will follow junior sports with great interest.
