World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Sofia postponed

Russia (bbabo.net) - The championship was to be held in the Bulgarian capital on March 7-13. But, unfortunately, as reported in a press release from the International Skating Union (ISU), it has been postponed.

There are many reasons for this. It is in March that the pandemic wave can reach its peak in Bulgaria. The rules for entering Bulgaria are complex, the release states. And the risk of infection for the figure skaters who came to the championship is significant. In addition, the issue of epidemiological safety concerns, in this case, very young underage skaters.

Very, very embarrassing. After all, last year's championship was postponed due to the pandemic. It is doubly insulting to our athletes - the permanent leaders of all junior competitions.

Yet some hope remains. If the pandemic wave subsides by the end of spring, then perhaps the championship will be held in May. Sophia will probably remain its owner. Now the ISU is negotiating with potential participants of the championship: will the new date be suitable, will it be possible to send a team to the tournament of the strongest juniors.

The final decision will be made online by the ISU Council. The Board meeting is scheduled for February 24th.
