Top 3 tennis player banned for eight weeks for assaulting referee

German Alexander Zverev received an eight-week suspension and a $25,000 fine for inappropriate behavior at a tournament in Acapulco, Mexico, R-Sport reports, citing the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).

Zverev was removed from the tournament in Acapulco on February 23. German and Brazilian Marcelo Melo lost to Briton Lloyd Glasspool and Finn Harry Heliovaare. At the end of the meeting, Zverev went up to the chief referee's tower and struck several hits with a racket on it.

Both sentences were suspended on probation until February 22, 2023. They will come into effect in case of unsportsmanlike conduct (disrespectful or aggressive actions), verbal abuse or physical contact with tournament officials.

The German can appeal this decision until March 11. In the ATP rankings, Zverev is in third place.
