At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, she became the second in the weight up to 75 kilograms, but at the end of 2016 the IOC annulled the results of the Chinese weightlifter Cao Lei and Vazhenina became the Olympic champion.

In total, Kazakhstan had six Olympic champions in weightlifting. These are Ilya Ilyin, Svetlana Podobedova, Maya Maneza, Zulfiya Chinshanlo and Nizhat Rakhimov. Moreover, Ilyin was a two-time Olympic champion (2008 and 2012). But all were deprived of gold after rechecks.
