The leadership of Russian football will be against the holding of the World Cup every two years

The RFU leadership supports the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), including in opposition to the idea of holding a world football championship every two years. This was reported to RBC Sport by a source in the RFU and two interlocutors in RPL clubs.

"The RFU appreciates the relationship with FIFA, but supports UEFA on the issue of reforming the world championship," a source in the RFU said, noting that the organization consults with the Russian championship clubs in making a decision.

Zenit President Alexander Medvedev confirmed to RBC Sport the information about the RFU's consultations with the clubs. “We are working out a unified position in the RFU. Within the framework of the RPL and RFU, and then we will declare about it. Public discussion is not appropriate here, ”he said, refusing to voice his position.

Two interlocutors from the leadership of RPL clubs added that the RFU consulted with them on world championship issues. “Many of our clubs also do not see much sense in holding a world championship every two years,” said one of the sources.

Today, FIFA will host an online summit with representatives of football federations from 211 countries, which will discuss the issue of holding a world championship every two years instead of four. The initiator of this reform is the head of FIFA Gianni Infantino, who thus wants to increase the profitability of the tournament and the organization. So far it is known that UEFA and CONMEBOL have spoken out against this idea.
