Manchester City player faces new rape charges

British prosecutors have brought rape charges against Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy under one new count, bringing the total to seven, according to the BBC.

The French footballer was arrested in August this year and charged with the rape of four women over 16 years old between October 2020 and August 2021. The reason for the arrest was the statement of a 17-year-old girl that the athlete sexually assaulted her in August at his home in Cheshire.

Earlier, 27-year-old Mendy was charged with rape on four counts, in November he was charged with rape on two more counts. The footballer is in custody.

In August, following the first charges, Manchester City suspended the player pending an investigation.

Manchester City are the reigning champions of England. Mendy joined the team in 2017 from AS Monaco for £ 52m and has played 75 matches for them, in which he scored two goals. As part of the French national team, the footballer became the world champion in 2018.
