Reputable American boxing trainer and analyst Teddy Atlas does not believe that promoters of star Mexican Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (57-1-2, 39 KOs) fought against Kazakhstani Gennady Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KOs) for too long.
“I don’t think Canelo’s team delayed the first fight against Golovkin for too long. It was a great fight. I don’t think they waited too long. Perhaps Alvarez’s team delayed a little, but they waited for the right amount of time.
They were driving, they had a golden goose in the box. They attracted money, fans and a certain amount of paid broadcasts. Therefore, the Canelo team understood that they had the power to force Golovkin to wait a bit, ”bbabo.net quoted Teddy as saying.
Recall that Canelo's first fight with Golovkin took place in September 2017 and ended in a draw by a split decision. A year later, the boxers had a rematch, and this time Alvarez won on points.
GGG has not entered the ring since last December when he knocked out Pole Kamil Sheremeta (21-2-1, 5 KOs), and defended his world title for the record 21st time. The fight between Kazakhstani and Japanese Ryota Murata (16-2, 13 KOs), which was planned at the end of 2021, was postponed due to the pandemic.
