Yuzuru Hanyu was the first in history to perform a quadruple axel at a competition

Two-time Olympic figure skating champion Yuzuru Hanyu was the first in history to land a quadruple axel competition. He did it in the free skate at the Japan Championships.

No one in history has ever managed to perform this jump in a competition. The 27-year-old Hanyu has previously successfully performed this jump in training.

Hanyu won the Japanese Championship for the sixth time in his career, earning a total of 211.05 points in two programs.

The Japanese Championship was the first tournament for Hanyu this season. He was forced to miss the Grand Prix streak due to an ankle injury.

Hanyu won the Olympic singles gold medals in 2014 and 2018. Also, the Japanese is a two-time world champion (2014, 2017) and a multiple winner of world championships. He was the first single skater in history to win all titles in senior and junior tournaments.

Hanyu was the first in history to land a quadruple rittberger in a competition in 2016. He is also the first skater to break 100 points in the short program, 200 points in the free skate and 300 points in the sum of the programs. At the moment, Hanyu is the world record holder for points for the short program (111.82).
