Deputy Drapeko spoke about the lack of agreement in society on the project on traditional values

The Ministry of Culture of Russia suspended the discussion of the draft Fundamentals of State Policy for the Preservation and Strengthening of Traditional Russian Spiritual and Moral Values after criticism from the artistic directors of leading Russian theaters, RBC reports. In a conversation with the First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Culture, Honored Artist of the RSFSR Elena Drapeko supported the decision of the ministry and stated that society should come to a consensus on what values should be written in the document.

“I believe that the Ministry of Culture is absolutely right, because, of course, the document is very crude. It has not yet been determined what are the traditional values for the Russian Federation. We believe that first there should be a public discussion, and then a state document is born from it. Because any law is a social contract. And today in our society there is no agreement on this topic. Therefore, we must decide on public morality, what we are defending at this stage. But first, a broad public discussion is needed for us to reach an agreement,” she said.

Drapeko added that the main values of Russia are already spelled out in the constitution. Among them, the politician named family values, the preservation of the right of access to cultural values for citizens of the Russian Federation and their right to participate in cultural life. At the same time, Drapeko believes that Russia is still obliged to introduce some restrictions.

“We must agree that the preservation of traditional values does not interfere with the development of culture, the development of new directions, new searches, some new experiments in the field of culture. Sometimes officials overdo it in this matter. Although I agree with those who are concerned that in our cultural life today there are clear violations of the foundations of public morality, we are constantly confronted with this. The Russian Federation has ratified a convention - both an international UN convention and the European Convention on Human Rights - which says that the state has the right to restrict the freedom of dissemination of information in order to protect individual rights, national security and public morality. That is, it is directly written in our international obligations,” she concluded.

Earlier, the Ministry of Culture suspended the discussion of the project on traditional values amid criticism that had fallen on the department. The project was criticized by the head of the Union of Theater Workers Alexander Kalyagin and the artistic directors of the Bolshoi Theater, Satyricon, Sovremennik, Moscow Art Theater. Chekhov.
