Russia - The premiere of Offenbach's operetta Tulipatan Island was presented at Helikon-Opera

Russia (bbabo.net), - Do not look for this heavenly place of happiness and fun on the maps of the world. The lost island, created exclusively for hedonistic pastime, was invented by the French king of the "light genre" Jacques Offenbach. And the founder and artistic director of "Helikon" Dmitry Bertman, in search of a "vitamin of joy", appointed this, not the most famous, but provocative operetta for the production, which was carried out by conductor Philipp Selivanov, director Ilya Ilyin, artist Rostislav Protasov.

"Tulipatan Island" was born in the most fruitful period of Offenbach's work, when a score came out from under his pen every two or three months. The world premiere took place in September 1868 at the Bouffes-Parisiens theater in Paris. But the "Island" could not compete in success with such Offenbach's masterpieces of the same years as "Paris Life", "Grand Duchess of Gerolstein" and "Perichole".

The plot of Tulipatan Island, as it should be in an operetta, is humorous and silly at the same time. The original libretto was written by Alfre Duryu and Henri Shivo, one of Offenbach's regular contributors. The Russian text for the Helikon premiere was composed, as well as the original plot was slightly altered by Marina Skalkina and Shura Nikitin. At the same time, all branded and obligatory operetta "jing-la-la" and "bang-bang-boom-boom" are preserved. And behind their festivity and light, not vulgar frivolity, one can read a poisonous irony about the moral foundations of modern society.

It turned out to be a lovely "event party" by the pool with a strict dress code (costume designer - Nika Vylegzhaninova) in blue tones with songs, dances and dressing up. The musicians of the orchestra are sailors here, and the conductor is the captain. In the White Column Hall of Princess Shakhovskaya, where the performance is being played, the distance between the stage and the audience is minimal, and therefore the audience feels like full participants in everything that happens.

Here is his own king Kakatua (Sergey Ababkin), fashionable and reckless (it seems that his image with a sarcastic note is written off from the image of stylist Sergei Zverev). Here they have their own laws, where they do not know the word "no". For example, you can borrow money, but you can’t return it, and quarantine is announced here only if someone indulges in sadness. The main characters, due to the intrigues of their parents - Mikhail Seryshev (Romboydal) and Marina Kalinina (Teodorina), in images similar to an old rocker and a French film star of the middle of the last century, live in "other people's costumes" and do not suspect it. Therefore, the male part of Alexis in the performance is performed by a soprano (the charming artist of Helikon's Alina Smolik), and the female Hermosa is performed by a tenor (artist of the Youth Opera Program of the Bolshoi Theater David Posulikhin).

But this circumstance does not become an obstacle to their feelings. On the island of freedom, love and fun, you can joke and play each other endlessly. And in the finale, to the maximum enthusiasm of the audience, the bouquet of an absolutely happy bride flies to the audience.
