What are the alternatives if Britain leaves the EU?

As reported by telegraph, Britain could face a referendum on whether to remain in or leave the EU as early as June.

The proposed ballot paper has already been published alongside other rules and regulations associated with the vote as part of draft legislation.

Prime Minister David Cameron has for months been negotiating with EU leaders in an attempt to secure better deals for Britain's relationship the EU.

But what happens if the British public votes to leave the 28-member union? What are some of the alternate options for our trade and political relationship with our neighbours?

A Norwegian model could see the UK become a part of the European Economic Area (EEA), which would give it access to most of the single market.

It would allow for representatives in EU institutions but no vote over EU rules.

If Britain arranged a customs union with the EU, as in the case of Turkey, it would give the UK access to the free market in manufactured goods but not financial services.
