Citi Research: US price surge was a 'kick in the gut'

The record rise in inflation in the United States came as a surprise to the Federal Reserve System (FRS) of the country. This was stated by the chief economist of Citi Research Nathan Sheets, reports CNBC.

“The rise in inflation in the US was a blow in the gut for the Fed. The current situation increases the likelihood that the regulator will sharply raise the key rate in March. However, even if the growth is 50 basis points, this may not be enough, ”the expert noted.

In his opinion, despite the problems associated with the spread of omicron, inflation remains at a high level. Therefore, more progress should be made to bring the inflation rate down to 3% by the end of 2022.

At the end of January, it was reported that over the past year, core inflation in the US, excluding food and energy prices, was at the level of 5.5%. Food prices went up by 6.3%, while energy carriers themselves added almost a third (+29.3%) in price. The Fed has said many times in recent times that they are worried about rising US inflation.
