Ex-head of the Central Bank Dubinin dispelled fears about blocking cards in case of war

In the event of war and tough sanctions, Russian cards will not be blocked. Citizens will be able to pay in rubles, including Visa and MasterCard "plastic". This was announced by the former chairman of the Bank of Russia Sergei Dubinin.

“Ruble settlements will not stop. Russian banks will continue to give citizens the opportunity to withdraw money from ATMs, make payments and settlements in rubles,” Dubinin said.

According to him, if sanctions are imposed, only payments in foreign currency can stop, as was the case in Iran. The restrictions then affected international payments.

The ex-head of the Central Bank noted that Visa and MasterCard cards issued by Russian banks will continue to work in the event of an aggravation of the geopolitical situation: restrictions will only affect "plastic" issued by foreign banks.

“The dollar and the euro make up 90% of all trade, and these operations can be stopped in the event of sanctions. This applies to both citizens and businesses. But with a high degree of probability, no one will dare to do this, otherwise the question arises - how to pay for the supply of oil and gas to the international market. This may be the other side of the coin. In addition, this decision undermines confidence in the dollar: if it can be manipulated so easily, then the world will look for other ways of settlement,” Dubinin said.

On the eve of the head of the international capital markets department of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Yakov Mirkin, said that in the event of a war between Russia and Ukraine, the West could impose tough sanctions against the Russian Federation, which would lead to the blocking of bank cards, accounts, rising prices, shortages of goods and defaults of a huge number of companies.
