Russia - Experts assessed the prospects for a polio vaccine against COVID-19

Russia (bbabo.net), - Polyvaccines are one of the promising areas in the development of immunobiological preparations. Experts, upon request, assessed how much the anti-covid vaccine based on several strains of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, the development of which was reported at the Gamaleya Center, could be in demand.

“Scientific experiments with a vaccine are conducted based on the tasks of science or the situation in healthcare. The development of polio vaccines is a logical course of research thought,” says Yan Vlasov, co-chairman of the All-Russian Union of Patients, Doctor of Medical Sciences. “How relevant this result will be and how it will be perceived by the medical community, depends on the specific stage of the development of the pandemic. At what point in the pandemic we will find ourselves at the moment when the results of the study are received, it is now impossible to predict. Experts are inclined to believe that each new strain will be easier to tolerate and may eventually transform into a common ARVI by its nature. Given the level of the research center that announced the development of such a vaccine, it can be assumed that scientists have arguments in favor of developing such a vaccine."

Previously, many experts suggested that as the coronavirus mutates, vaccines will need to be adapted to new strains, and vaccination against COVID-19 may become regular - by analogy with the annual flu vaccination. And here, Vlasov believes, it is necessary to work with the population, explaining the benefits of vaccination.

"The assessment of research work is largely determined by the quality of explanatory work with citizens. Arguments are needed in favor of vaccination, and perhaps the publication of the results of research work. Then the attitude of citizens to vaccination will change. Including it is necessary to explain how many times one needs to be revaccinated," the expert noted.

Vlasov recalled that the vaccine affects the immune system, with the wrong approach to immunization, "you can achieve the opposite situation, get an adverse effect on the immune system."

Olga Shuppo, scientific director of the Grand Clinic, a network of immunorehabilitation and preventive medicine clinics, warns about the possible risks when using polyvaccines.

"Vaccines with 3-6 different components act as a more serious burden on the immune system. Moreover, any vaccination requires preliminary preparation and strengthening of the body: it is necessary to have a balanced state of immune responses, make sure that there is no serious auto-aggression in the body, compensate and eliminate all foci of inflammation. Then the body will be able to adequately, fully develop the appropriate antibodies," said Dr. Shuppo.
