Moldova may break the gas contract with Gazprom

Moldova's gas contract with Gazprom, concluded in 2021, may be terminated due to the resulting debt to the Russian company. This was announced on the air of the Journal TV channel by Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Spinu, writes RBC.

According to him, the further fate of the contract depends on the result of the audit proposed by Gazprom. At the same time, the assessments of the parties on the issue of what the audit itself should be, differ.

“Gazprom sent its proposals on the terms of the audit, but, unfortunately, we could not take them all into account, because we want to conduct an in-depth audit, not an accounting analysis. There is a risk that because of this, Gazprom may terminate the current contract,” Spinu said.

The Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister specified that Chisinau is studying other sources of gas purchases in case supplies from Russia stop.

On October 29, 2021, Moldova agreed with Gazprom to extend the expiring gas contract for another five years after protracted negotiations. Moldovan President Maia Sandu stressed that the country's government wants a better gas price.
