The EU proposed to exclude the energy sector from possible sanctions against Russia

The European Union, at the initiative of Italy, is considering the possibility of excluding the energy sector from new possible sanctions against Russia in the event of an escalation of the situation around Ukraine. It is reported by Bloomberg, citing sources.

According to the agency, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, together with his partners, is discussing ways to mitigate the impact of possible sanctions against Russia on the EU countries.

Bloomberg also managed to find out that Italy, together with Germany, are trying to protect their banking sectors in the event of new sanctions against Russia. According to sources, the Italian authorities are proposing to focus the EU's restrictive measures on individuals, and not on broad sections of the Russian economy.

The agency clarifies that the negotiations began after the statement by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell about his readiness to impose sanctions against Russia in the event of the latter's invasion of Ukraine. At the same time, Borrell emphasized that the energy sector is at the center of this package.

Earlier it was reported that the Senate of the US Congress will support the imposition of US sanctions against Russia in the event of "aggression" against Ukraine.
