German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that sanctions in response to Russia's recognition of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics will be adopted within a day, Interfax reports.

“In the EU, we discussed the first package of sanctions and will make a joint decision on it within a day,” he said.

On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed orders recognizing the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics. The heads of the republics Denis Pushilin and Leonid Pasechnik addressed the corresponding request.

On February 22, the State Duma of Russia unanimously ratified the agreements on friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance with the DPR and LPR. The documents for ratification were submitted by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The parliaments of the republics of Donbass have already ratified the agreements.

Earlier, Scholz instructed the German Ministry of Economy to stop the certification process of the Russian Nord Stream 2 project.
