Finnish enterprises are preparing for a possible cessation of gas supplies from Russia

Industrial enterprises in Finland are preparing for a possible cessation of gas supplies from Russia. This could happen if further EU sanctions and possible counter-sanctions are imposed due to the situation around Ukraine, Finnish broadcaster Yle reported. The broadcaster noted that the transition of power plants using Russian gas to other energy sources "is unlikely to cause big problems."

“We are monitoring the situation with Ukraine and looking into opportunities to replace Russian gas,” said Ansa Räätäri, a spokeswoman for Ovako.

The company's steel plant in Imatra, Finland, which is owned by the company, partially uses Russian gas. According to Räätäri, the Balticconnector gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia could be an alternative source of fuel.

According to Yle, now gas is supplied to Finland in approximately equal volumes both from the Russian Federation and via Balticconnector.

Olli Sipilä, executive director of the operator of the Finnish gas transmission system Gasgrid Finland, agrees with Räätäri. He believes that there will be enough gas for Finland, even if supplies from Russia stop thanks to an alternative gas pipeline.

“Balticconnector makes it possible to gain access through Estonia to a gas storage facility in Latvia and an LNG terminal in Lithuania,” he said.

On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the recognition of the sovereignty of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics. Treaties of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance were signed with their leaders.

About the sanctions of the European Union and the United States, which followed this decision - in the material.
