EU may blacklist Putin as part of third round of sanctions

During an emergency summit in Brussels, the heads of state and government of the EU countries are preparing a third package of sanctions against Russia, which may be introduced if the current situation in Ukraine continues or worsens. This is reported by TASS with reference to a source in the delegation of one of the EU countries on the sidelines of the meeting.

“Almost from the very beginning of the summit, the leaders have been discussing the preparation of a third package of sanctions,” he said.

According to the diplomat, the possibility of disconnecting Russia from the SWIFT international payment system is being considered as part of the new package of sanctions. However, there is no unanimous decision on this issue in the EU yet.

“Some countries insist on it, and some are against it,” he explained, adding that among the latter, in particular, Germany.

The source added that the leaders of the summit also touched upon the possibility of blacklisting Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Inclusion of Putin in the blacklist is another option under discussion for the third package. There is also no exact decision on this issue yet, ”summed up the agency’s interlocutor.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he had decided to conduct a military special operation to protect Donbass in response to a request for help from the heads of the LPR and DPR. Ukraine severed diplomatic relations with Russia.
