Zelensky urges US Senate to vote on sanctions against Nord Stream 2

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Kiev is calling on the United States to support the law on sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

"Ukraine asks all its friends in the US Senate to support the law on the protection of Europe's energy security," the head of Ukraine wrote on Twitter.

Earlier, the media reported that US senators will vote on sanctions against Nord Stream 2 on January 14. For the bill to be approved, it must be supported by 60 members of the Senate.

According to the representative of the US State Department Ned Price, the project of new sanctions on "Nord Stream - 2" from the Republicans can weaken the relationship between Washington and European allies. He also stressed that the amendment from Republican Senator Ted Cruz is not "genuine progress" in countering Moscow's aggression and defending Kiev.

At the same time, representatives of the US Republican Party believe that the Senate will vote to approve Cruise's initiative.

Nord Stream 2 envisaged the construction of two strings of a gas pipeline with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year from the Russian coast through the Baltic Sea to Germany - from the port of Ust-Luga in the Leningrad Region to Greifswald.

This project is actively opposed by the United States, which is promoting its liquefied natural gas in the European Union. In addition, the project has other adversary countries, including Ukraine.
