On January 11, the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev approved the composition of the new government of the republic. The ministers of internal and foreign affairs, as well as the head of the Ministry of Defense, retained their posts. The post of first deputy prime minister was taken by Roman Sklyar, a former deputy chairman of the government. Former deputy ministers in the new Cabinet headed by the ministries of energy, industry and infrastructure, the ministry of information. Former Prime Minister Askar Mamin and his government resigned on January 5 amid protests and unrest in the country. Smailov was then appointed Acting Prime Minister.
