EU may quarrel with Vanuatu over golden visas

The European Commission has called for the abolition of the visa-free regime with the state of Vanuatu due to the extreme ease of obtaining citizenship there. It is reported by The Guardian.

Thus, under the Golden Visa program, Vanuatu citizenship can be obtained for as little as €130,000 without ever having visited the island. The publication notes that due to the attractiveness of such an application, criminals began to use the scheme, including large fraudsters and drug dealers.

In the event that the countries of the European Union support the proposal of the European Commission, citizens of Vanuatu who received citizenship after May 2015 (when the Golden Visa program started) will be forced to apply for a visa to enter Europe.

Previously, Vanuatu, along with several other countries, was deprived of the right to vote in the UN due to debts to the organization.
