Germany plans to discuss arms supplies to Ukraine in Kiev

German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock will discuss in Kiev the topic of arms supplies to Ukraine. This was stated by the representative of the Foreign Ministry Andrea Sasse, her words are quoted by RIA Novosti.

“The Ukrainian government has been declaring this position all the time in recent weeks, which, of course, will become part of the negotiations of the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Kiev. Among other things, talking about these different assessments and requirements, expectations,” she said.

According to Sasse, the position of the federal government is unchanged and consists in “pursuing a restrictive policy of arms imports,” but at the same time, the German Cabinet provides support in other areas related to the army.

Earlier, Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk urged Burbock to promise arms supplies to Kiev during her upcoming visit to Ukraine. He stressed that Ukrainians are aware that the ruling coalition in Germany has agreed to pursue a restrictive policy on arms exports, which provides for non-delivery of weapons to crisis zones.

On January 11, foreign policy spokesman for the German Soyuz-90/Green Party, Jurgen Trittin, said that arms supplies to Ukraine would not contribute to the de-escalation of the situation, on the contrary, they would disrupt the negotiation process. He stressed that at the same time, Kiev "has the right to expect support for the sake of maintaining territorial integrity."
